The magazine ranks over 200 schools annually. USF's "third- tier" placement means that it falls somewhere be tween the places of 116 to 172. News of the ranking, which was published in the Sept. 16 issue, prompted lukewarm reaction on the USF campus. "[The ranking] is not held in high regard," said Chris Krzak, assistant director and operations manager for Admissions. Krzak said that the Admissions staff doesn't consider the ranking very important, partly because of the way the rankings are compiled. "The staffs at each school rate '[The ranking] is not held in high regard. The staffs at each school rate themselves.' — Chris Krzak Assistant Director for Admissions themselves," he said. Administrators at other universities slammed the report as well. "Once an institution submits the data, they have no control over what U.S. News does with it," Loris Davanzo, an analyst with the UC Berkeley Budget and Planning Office, was quoted as saying in the Daily Californian. Berkeley was ranked 27th overall. This year's top 10 National Universities, which do not include liberal arts colleges and universities, are, in order: Yale University, Princeton University, Harvard University, Duke University, Massachusettes Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Darthmouth College, Brown University, California Institute of Technology and Northwestern University (which tied for 9th). With about 350 people attending the three-day retreat, Youth 2000 consisted of talks, workshops, mass, rosaries, and songs. "The retreat is to help people find Jesus and to know Him as a friend and a loving God," said Anne Brawley, national director of Youth 2000 in the United States. Youth 2000 was founded in Europe by an Englishman named Ernest Williams. Inspired by Pope John Paul Il's-message at the World Youth Day keld in 1989 in Santiago de Compostello, Spain, Williams started the retreat hoping to unite the youth ofthe world through Jesus and the celebration ofthe Eucharist. The first retreat was held in 1990 in former Yugoslavia and had 6,000 youth in attendence. That success led to rapid growth in Europe from England to Germany, and then to the rest ofthe world from Trinidad to Australia. Dallas was the first U.S. site of Youth 2000 in June of 1992 with 700 attendants, mostly young people. "This year is the first time Youth 2000 has been held in San Francisco," Brawley said. "USF is a beautiful campus and San Francisco is a beautiful setting." Due to the popularity of the re treat, Youth 2000 is booked until 1998 and will not be back in San Francisco anytime soon. "We have one weekend retreat per city, and right after San Francisco we will be in Washington, D.C.," Brawley added. According to Brawley, the purpose is for young people to have the true belief in the real presence ofthe Eucharist.
