San Francisco FOGHORN Volume 91, Issue 8 University of San Francisco November JO, 1994 Rains pound the Hilltop Six inches fall on City; campus suffers damage Kent German News Editor Last weekend's torrential rainfall not only drenched San Francisco with six inches of rain but also caused extensive damage to the USF campus. According to Glenn Loomis, Director of Plant Services, the rainfall was the heaviest to be received in a twenty-four period for over one hundred years. Loomis also said that the rain caused over $50,000 worth of damage to university property. The three buildings to receive the heaviest flooding were Cowell Hall, Campion Hall, and Saint Ignatius Church. "Our entire office was flooded," said Nate Johnson, Director of Public Safety. "We lost importantdocuments that had to be rhrownaway." "I was in the office at midnight on Saturday, when the water suddenly came in," Johnson said. "We dealt with it as best we could." He reported that his office received three or four inches of water which caused the office to be closed on Sunday and Monday for cleanup. The Office of Public Safety, located in the basement of Campion Hall, received some of the worst flooding. Also located in the Campion basement is the office for the Saint Ignatius Institute which also received watet damage. Johnson reported that Admissions Office lost many materials, including USF Course Catalogs. The Office of Instructional Media, located in the basement of Cowell Hall, also reported damage. However, classrooms and offices, usually empty over the weekend, were not the only places to be swamped, as water seeped into a room in Phelan Hall on Saturday. Junior Mike Frese, a resident of room 645 in rhe Erasmus Project woke up Saturday morning to find that the rain had leaked into his room. "The whole floor was covered," Frese said. He added, "It was really wet underneath the closets," and that the water had soaked the carpet. Despite attempts to clean up the water, Freeze said, "It still totally reeks in our room." Erasmus Resident Advisor Jody Stonehocker reported that a room in the Phelan Multicultural Community, also on the top floor of Phelan, received flooding, as did a section of the floor hallway. fo\ ISSUE IN THE SPOTLIGHT Landslide win for Wilson and Proposition 187 Foghorn Staff Report This data was last updated at 09 Nov 1994 1:20am PST [77% precincts reporting) Governor (D) Kathleen Brown (R) Pete Wilson (I) Jerome MC Cready (L) Richard Rider (P) Gloria La Riva 39.8% 55.9% 1.6% 1.8% 0.9% United States Senator (96% precincts) (D) Dianne Feinstein 47% (R) Michael Huffington 45% (I) Poul Meeuwenberg 1.7% (L) Richard Boddie (P) Elizabeth Barron (G) Barbara Blong Proposition 181 -Rail and Clean Air Bond 1 83 - Recall State Officers 184-Three Strikes 185 - Gas Tox 186 - Health Services Tax 1 87 - Illegal Aliens 1 88 - Smoking Regulations 1 89 - No Bail Crimes 190-Judicial Performance Commission 191 - Abolish Justice Courts Yes 34.6% 67.4% 72.1% 19.2% 26.2% 59.8% 29.7% 79.2% 64.0% 2.1% 3.0% 1.7% No 65.4% 32.6% 27.9% 80.8% 73.8% 40.2% 70.3% 20.8% 36.0% 60.8% 39.2% lettTT FORISTtR Kent German, Foghorn news editor, presents his case before the Media Council (see story, below) Foghorn faces off with Media Council FACES President Fernandez alleges 'blatant lie7 in formal complaint Leigh Ann Lombardo Foghorn Staff A formal complaint was brought against Foghorn News Editor Kent German and the Foghorn staff "regarding a blatant lie and the practice of unethical journalism." It was allegedly published in the October 20 issue of the Foghorn in an article entitled, "FACES Distributes Postcard Attacking Columbus Day," according to a formal complaint by Mary Rose Fernandez, FACES representative, to the ASUSF Senate. The complaint arose because the article stated that Fernandez was "unavailable for comment" after an interview between Fernandez and German had taken place. An open meeting was held on November 2, at which the USF Media Council heard Fernandez's complaint, along with the Foghorn's response to the charge. During this meeting, the Council decided to proceed with a hearing regarding an investigation of the Foghorn editorial board and the"removal ofKent German for unethical journalism and unprofessional practices," as requested in Fernandez's formal complaint. The hearing is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Novembet 16, at 4 p.m. in McLaren 250 and is open to all USF students, faculty and staff. Inside this Issue... Inside this Issue...
