San Francisco FOGHORN UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO Volume 89, Number 4 The Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J.: Striving for a brighter future Kelly Sullivan Features Editor The University of San Francisco has undergone tremendous changes in the past year, all of which would not have been possible without the dedicated and caring hand of our University President, the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S J. Looking back to Juneof 1991, when Father Schlegel first came to the University, he states that he spent that time generally watching and listening to the way the University did business, the way they serviced students, and the image that the University played in the broader community. He states that this enabled him to come to a more clearly defined sense of what the University is and the role it will play in the future. "I made a personal commitment to myself that I would address any three of those areas that I found lacking, if they didn't meet up to what I hoped to be the role of the institution." When asked what he feels his major accomplishment has been within the last year, Fr. Schlegel states that it is "survival." "I say survival facetiously but on one level I do mean it. For me, survival means the ability to find in the work I do fulfillment, to find in the space I work in job satisfaction, to find in the people I meet comfortable, challenging, and supportive colleagues. When I say survival, I really mean all three of those things. I have found issues, I have found people and I have found progress, all which complement Father Schlegel celebrated a one-year anniversary as President I think my own abilities and my own temperament and my own deepest aspirations." While continuing to emphasize the standards and values ofthe University as a Jesuit institution, Fr. Schlegel states that he will also focus on goals that involve strengthening the University on a campus level, on a community level and beyond. On a campus level, Fr. Schlegel S.J. and the USF Board of Trustees. These have been faculty office, laboratory renovations and upgrades. Also, new full-time, tenure track teaching positions have been added since the summer. The faculty offices, which are located on the fifth floor of the University Center, were originally designed as temporary office space in 1966. Before the renovations, the original furniture from the temporary offices wasstill being used. Furniture included metal desks, which were 24 inches wide and 60 inches long. The floors were uncarpeted and the original curtains were still in use. During the summer, the President took a tour of the University Center with the Board of Trustees. Upon seeing the condition of die offices, money was provided for some, but not all, of the offices occupied by full-time faculty to be repainted and refurbished. | Faculty were provided withanew.larger wood desks with the option of having an "arm" for the desk to accommodate computers, a new desk chair, and two matching student chairs. Being a great believer in the statement, "you have to look successful to be successful," he states that this perception is very much a part of what a university is all about. Though physical appearances are superficial, he feels that "the bricks and mortars" do portray a deeper good feeling about the self. "I am committed to making the place look good because I think we are good. I think we're better. I think the University of San Francisco is better than it looks physically, I think the product is much better than that. I think the University of San Francisco is much better than the perception in the community and indeed the nation." Father Schelgel states that he will also continue to address die needs of the students. He has encouraged those areas that service students, such as the Bursar's office and the registrar's office, to be more "responsive, more patient, more understanding. "Sometimes when crowds come in at one time people do lose perspective and sometimes students become numbers without names and I don't like that at all." Internally, Fr.
